An Era Comes To a Close

In a couple days, Sen. Edward Kennedy will join two of his three brothers* at rest in Arlington National Cemetery. With his burial, comes the closing of a generation of three Kennedy brothers who graced our Nation’s Capital reaching back more than fifty years.

Sen. Kennedy worked with members of both sides of the aisle and championed causes for people who were from far lesser means. Over three hundred bills he wrote/cowrote became law during his service, which have affected all of our lives in a positive manner.  Many politicians, Democrat and Republican, have taken pause to reflect upon their interaction with Sen. Kennedy and the legacy he leaves behind.  At the time this was written, thousands of people are waiting in line to walk past the body of the late Senator.

Sen. Kennedy made some great misjudgments during the course of his life.  I have shared my bone of contention with him and I will leave it at that. However, I must say that I do have great respect for a man who stood up for those with disabilities, for affording women an opportunity to be treated equal to their male counterparts in sports, for trying to make healthcare for all a reality.

Whether you are Liberal, Moderate, or Conservative, you must admit, that Sen. Kennedy was a force to be reckoned with.  He had brilliant oratory skills, and took his position in the Senate quite seriously, knowing what an honor it was to serve his state and the nation for over 40 years. He brought a level of decency to a dirty profession. We have lost a true advocate for America.

*Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. died in WWII and his remains were never recovered.

  1. What a loss, and at such a vulnerable time……..we need his passion!!!!

  2. This is such a blow to this country- and to healthcare- we must pass healthcare reform in his name!

  3. Mari…..I sent that very statement to all on my FB!!!!!

  4. It’s to bad he didn’t go along with Nixons Health care plan,
We would have a public option by now.
He said later in life it was one of his major mistakes.
I wonder how many of those oppposed to Obams plan will also regret it later.
I have to have faith that something good will come out of this.
