Sotomayor So Far

So far I think that Sonia Sotomayor is doing pretty well from what I have read about the Confirmation Hearings. I wish I had the time to take off and to try and get a seat to witness it for myself. However, I’m a working stiff would like to get the fuck out of dodge at some point, so I’ve had to keep up to date on the hearings by checking the news articles when I have a break with my work… well, when I’m not causing some sort of trouble in the office.

I was happy to read of her response to a question thrown out by Sen. John Cornyn who basically tried to corner her on abortion. The jackass (because he is one) asked her a question about a late-term abortion. Instead of taking the bait from a huge pro-lifer, she made the following statement, “All I can say to you is what the court’s done and the standard that the court has applied. We don’t make policy choices on the court; we look at the case before us.”

Arlen Spector, who was a bit friendlier towards Sotomayor in questioning also asked her an abortion-related question as to whether she felt that the 1992 ruling in regards to the reaffirmation of Roe v. Wade was a sort of “super precedent” she did not respond to him in a direct manner either.

She was also about 2nd Amendment and handled herself pretty well, not appearing to be a crazy member of some militia, nor a person who wanted to wipe the country of guns.

I think the thing that even senators should be aware of is that although opinions are like assholes – we all have one, the job of a judge is to follow precedent in the lower levels of the Judicial Branch and that as a member of the Supreme Court it is his/her job to interpret the Constitution when ruling on their cases. It’s not a position that is supposed to involve political preferences, personal feelings or emotions. I do agree that we each see things a bit differently due to our own experiences. That’s why we have more than one judge on the bench of the Supreme Court. In fact, this came into play thanks to Sen. Jeff Sessions.

By the way, if you ever try to run for office or hope to be nominated for some sort of position that requires the grilling by others, beware that everything you ever say, will probably be taken out of context and used against you.

In the end I do feel that she is setting herself up pretty well to follow along those lines as a (most likely) the 111th Supreme Court Justice. However, that’s just my take. Feel free to give your two cents.

  1. She is so much smarter than these guys- i feel terrible that she has to waste her days running circles around them.

  2. my 2 cents: I think she’s been brilliant with her answers, as far as fending off the idiots……..pretty boring otherwise, right?? I think she’ll pass the test……….

  3. She IS so much smarter than they are – then, that’s not hard to do ;)

Seriously, I like her much more than Roberts or some of the other ideological assholes currently seated on the court.

  4. Jeff Sessions is such an A hole….
