Now it’s Sotomayor’s Turn

The confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor are about to start and both sides of the aisle are already starting to make their feelings known about her. In the end, it’s the majority vote that will seal the deal for Sotomayor.

Today, she will have to sit through statements made by all 19 members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.  Some of what the members will have to say will be positive. Others, well, let me just say that I do not envy the woman one bit.

When all is said and done, Sonia Sotomayor might possibly be the first Hispanic woman to sit on the bench.  No matter how you slice it, as politically neutral and objective, as a Supreme Court Justice should be, she will still bring a different set of life experience to the bench.  I have heard some say that she will push her own agenda if she’s given a robe at the Nation’s Highest Court. However, I feel that she will push her agenda no more than Justice Roberts, Justice Roberts, or even Justice Thomas.  The way she views the Constitution might be a bit different from then.  Then again, opposing views aren’t such a bad thing.  Having people look at something from different sides allows us the ability to see things in a clearer picture, to play devil’s advocate, and to challenge a line of thinking that we might not seek out on our own.

Although I am not a huge fan of Justice Roberts, especially when he was awarded Chief Justice, I read through the confirmation hearings, paid attention to the news, and was respectful the decision rendered to give him a seat on the bench.  I hope those who might have an opposing set of politics from me will give the same treatment to her. Everyone deserves a fair turn.

By  the way, in 1992, she was nominated by George H.W. Bush for her seat as Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. In 1998, Bill Clinton then nominated her for her current position as Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit.  Oh, and she identifies herself as an Independent when it comes to political parties.  Just something to keep in mind. I’m going to keep my fingers crossed for the woman.

  1. Change is good! Although personally, I can’t stand Roberts.

  2. I hope she weathers the storm, and my apologies in advance for whatever heinous things Utah senator/asshole orrin hatch will say.

  3. Hatch wasn’t as bad as Jeff Sessions from Alabama Mari,
he is a big giant turd.

  4. Hatch was a little pinched, but respectful…don’t like him much though. Sessions? Well, he’s just a rascist!!!! Will be fun to see him throwing race accusations at her…what a farce! The more I find out about our elected officials, the more I think we need to change them all out….they are WAY behind the times! I think Sotomayor is a good pick, and hopefully they will too……..
