Earlier this evening I was minding my own business catching up on the daily headlines when I came across this lovely article, GM recalling 1.5 million vehicles over potential fires. I, being a verbal trasher of shittely-made (damn it, it’s a word now!!) vehicles, of course clicked on the article. Apparently the GM models mentioned have the potential to cause a fire in the engine if drops of oil fall into the exhaust system, which I’m guessing has happened enough to recall 1.5 million vehicles. How many times does this have to occur before a recall comes into play? Just curious.
Now, I’m not sure if you’ve paid attention to any of their recent advertisements, but in an effort to get people to buy their crappy vehicles, GM has rolled out the “Total Confidence” package, which includes things like “Vehicle Value Protection” among other things. Oh, and the protection of the value of the vehicle isn’t what you think it is. Directly quoted from the site:
“If you trade your vehicle in to the dealer and pay off the loan, you can recover the difference up to $5,000. If you sell your vehicle in a private sale and pay off the loan, you can recover the difference up to $2,500.”
Too bad GM vehicles depreciate quite a bit. Their resale value is one of the worst in the auto industry. However, I suppose recovering $2,500 from a private sale is better than eating it all. They didn’t state how much they will pay to make up the difference in what the insurance company will give you if your engine blows up. (I would say that it might be wise to get GAP insurance when you buy your car.)
As GM grows closer to bankruptcy, let us be reminded of the finer qualities of today’s GM…..
Oh, that’s right, they don’t have any. GM has gone cheap on their products for years, with substandard quality that has been blinged up, but is still substandard. The company has made shortcuts. Do you think there would a risk of dripping oil into exhaust systems if shortcuts hadn’t been made? That’s what I thought.

Well bloody hell – I have a Saturn. We’ll see if this is on the list.
When will they learn their lesson? We need fuel efficient cars that we can afford! Until they do that, I don’t want to even hear from them……..
There’s some new commercial out there about how our cars are actually MORE fuel efficient that Honda or Toyota (can’t remember if it’s GM or Chevy) but the difference is only 2 or 3 MPG and as long as their cars are pieces of shyte that fall apart after 2 or 3 years, why the hell would I want to buy one?
They just don’t get it.
Unbelievable that these companies would stand by and watch
Japan take over the auto market.
I’ve owned Hondas for the last six years now. Prior to that, I had a Dodge– well, the mechanic had my Dodge more than I did.
It’s going to take a lot of issues of Consumer Reports for me to ever consider buying American again. I want people to keep their jobs and I want to support American auto makers– but their products are awful.
That cricket video is a-w-e-s-o-m-e!
Next time I am in class and I ask a question to which not a single student replies, I am going to play that video. I’ll bet it won’t take them long to respond after a few times.
Cheers!
