White House Gets a Veggie Garden

Today Mrs. Obama broke ground on a produce and herb garden at the White House with the help of some elementary school children. Frankly, it’s about time that the White House had a veggie garden.  I grew up in a family where we always had some portion of our yard dedicated to a vegetable garden.  One of my musts when I was on the market for  a house was to have enough space for a small vegetable garden. I lucked out because I purchased a home with a backyard that had more flower and vegetable gardens than grass. (I can mow my front a back lawn in under half an hour….  I make up for it with the time spent weeding.)  I don’t just like having a garden because I grew up with it.  I like it because I know exactly where my summer veggies came from, and what conditions they grew in.  I also believe that my peppers (normally four to five different varieties are grown) are better and spicier than what I find in the grocery stores.  Above all, having my own vegetable garden just makes economic sense, and let’s face it, we’re all trying to save money these days.

The White House veggie garden is a good example for the rest of us.  If you haven’t tried gardening, you should give it a shot. I find that weeding can be a great stress relief after a busy day at work… and it’s good exercise!

I love these people. it is so great to have some intelligent life in the White House..if only they can get Congress under control.

  2. Great idea to use some of that vast lawn for something useful…go figure! People with a brain!
I personally am expanding my garden space this year, as many people are…I just love watching food grow!!!!! makes sense and is good for the soul! I live on the Central coast in Calif, so we are used to seeing things grow wherever we go…lots of artichokes, strawberries, lettuce, chard, brussel sprouts, etc. Can’t wait to get started on MY garden!

  3. I will never be able to match my grandfather’s tomatoes. I used to go out to his garden with a shaker of salt. Mmmm…

I hope I can grow some this year. I ate asparagus and cantaloupe today, they tasted so fresh, new and springy after the same-old winter fare. Can’t wait for April, we always eat a lot of strawberries starting around easter.

  4. I love weeding as a vehicle through which to take out frustration.
