Being a Lefty Has Its Perks

I bet you have noticed that our President is a southpaw (baseball term for being a lefty). In fact, President Obama is the eighth president who is left-handed. Left-handed people are pretty unique. We are a minority. However, I don’t mind it. In fact, it’s because of most objects in this world are catered to the right-handed people of the world, that many of us lefties are a bit more ambidextrous. Some were forced at a young age to write with their right hands. Luckily, that didn’t happen to me. As a child, had  a tendency to have accidents that involved my left hand often enough that I now favor my right hand when eating, opening jars, and carrying garbage to the curb.  I still write with my left hand, as horrible as my handwriting is.

I came across an article about how the left-handed trait has survived evolution and some of the perks of being left-handed.  It also mentions some of the downsides to being a lefty. One, more accident prone, as well as a higher chance for having learning disabilities.  Well, I am accident prone and I do have the LD, so I fit the mold when it comes to being a lefty.

As I was doing a bit of research, I even came upon a website dedicated to Left-Handers’ Day (It’s on August 13th). It has facts about left-handers and even a shop full of products for lefties…. like scissors. Man, right-handed scissors were the bane of my existence for years!!!

For any of you that might be a lefty, what’s one of the most annoying things about living in a right-handed world? Also, what’s one of the perks you find to being a lefty?

  1. Love this since I am a lefty, too. I did a post on this sometime in the last month.

Annoying thing about being left handed: right handed desks.

Perks: being ambidextrous and using more of my brain than the average uni-hander :)

  2. I’m not left-handed, but I do a lot of things (except write) with my left hand – holding books, opening doors, etc. And it’s really fucking annoying that a lot of these things are obviously designed for right-handed people!

My grandmother is left-handed and she was one of the people forced to learn to write with her right hand because it was considered “more proper.” So now she’s ambidextrous.

  3. I will ask my daughter and get back to you later!

  4. Here is Zoë, the lefty Daughter (I was told to capitalize daughter…)

Hello.~ Most annoying thing about being left-handed? I hate when the pencil smears while I write. I come home from school with graphite all over the side of my hand.

The best thing about it is probably the when I’m writing something, and someone will come up next to me and say, “you’re left-handed? That’s so cool!” or “I’m a lefty too, high five!” or something. Yup… yup.

  5. Thanks Zoë!
I never cared for the smudging thing myself. Although there aren’t that many of us lefties, I can say that the office I work has an abnormal amount of lefties: 50%.
