Would You Go For It?

Yesterday, Gov. Blagojevich named Roland Burris to take Barack Obama’s Senate seat. Now, with all of the attention that Gov. Blagojevich has received in regards to trying to sell the Senate seat, I am amazed that Rolan Burris is accepting the nomination.  The Secretary of State of Illinois has already said that he will not certify the appointment. If he were to, it’s still up to Sen. Reid to allow the nomination.  He has the power to single-handedly turn it down.

Now, if I were in Mr. Burris’s shoes, I don’t believe I would accept the nomination to the Senate.  Granted, having the desire to become a representative of one’s state, such as becoming a Senator is a big deal. However, being appointed by a morally and politically corrupt man in order to gain access to the Senate is not the way I would want to go about getting there. I’d probably turn down the nomination and seek it out on my own.  The stigma attached to being appointed by Gov. Blagovich will overshadow the great work that Roland Burris has done in the state of Illinois. If his nomination does go through and he does gain entry into the Senate, the strides that he will try to make while in office might be hindered by how he gained the seat.

So, let’s say that you were in the shoes of Roland Burris. Would you accept the nomination or would you turn it down and ask that Gov. Blagojevich never mention your name, privately or publicly?

  1. From what I heard this morning on NPR there is not much that Illinois can do to stop this nomination. Even the Sec of State can only hold off so long. The law says the Gov can and will appoint someone.

Having said that, I think most politicians are such narcisists that they believe that nothing can stop them, even the taint of a scandal like this one.

Me? I would not have even taken Blagojevich’s phone calls. Isn’t that why there is caller ID?

  2. Watching that news conference last night was like watching an SNL skit in the making. I wonder who they will get to play Blago?

Rachel Maddow had Burris her show last night. From what I gathered, it seems that he has not been extremely successful in Illinois politics. He always seems to running against someone and losing. He supposedly lost to Blago for Governor.

I think what the Illinois Democrats are afraid of is that this guy is basically weightless and will do nothing more than just be a place card.

  3. I can’t believe the balls on this governor! Step down! He’s going to ruin this other guy. Unbelievable.

  4. And we thought Bush and Co. were arrogant! Blogo’s doing whatever he wants, and we’re just having to watch it all happen…what’s with that?
If I were Burris, I wouldn’t have let the guy within 10ft. of me, let alone take his call and say YES! ???? This kind of thinking is why he’s an unsuccessful politician, and now he’s toast….too bad he may make it to the Senate…the Senate can still reject him though, and if so, then he’s washed up…

  5. This whole thing pisses me off. The vacancy is a challenge to fill to begin with because of who is vacating it.

Blagojevich is a tool of every brand. People first? Not. He’s like Palin– doesn’t know when his 15 minutes are over (and they’ve been over for a long time now).

Why hasn’t anyone thrown any shoes at this moron? Oh, yeah, that’s right: he’s too stupid to get the insult. He would probably think the thrower was trying to smooth his weird hair for him with the gentle graze of a flying loafer.

Happy New Year! May all the crooked politicians (Bush/Cheney on down) get their due: impeachment, jail time, or both. Heck, I’d be happy with a formal inquiry into Cheney bloviating his support for torture. We must keep our politicians accountable.

  6. I can’t believe he’d want a seat that badly that he’d be 1) blind to the fact that THEY WILL NOT SEAT HIM! and 2) blind to the fact that having his name associated with someone who will likely be in jail is a very bad thing!

But then again…you have to have a huge ego to want to be in politics, right?

  7. I can’t imagine what Burris is thinking.
They need a good clean up in Illinois politics.in fact they need a good cleanup every where to get rid of the greed out there.
I keep looking at the sky for the fireballs..”SHE” can’t be happy. ya think?
