This Trumps A Gift Card

present Pictures, Images and Photos

In the spirit of the holidays, I’ve decided to focus today’s post on something a bit different: Christmas Gifts. Well, not really gifts as much as gift. I came across an article about a son who is giving his mom a kidney for Christmas. Every year, I give out gift cards to my parents that are of use…  and yes, I send out two separate gift cards, since my parents are divorced and live in different parts of the country… sharing a gift card would be cheap and odd.

Now, I take pride in my gift  selections for loved ones. However, have I given a body part? Nope.  I think giving a body part to a loved one is one of the most selfless gifts one can give another person.  This makes me think about the son’s six other siblings.  I mean, the 20 year-old is giving a kidney.  The rest of them can’t even come close to a gift that could top that.

Seriously though, I think it’s sweet that a young adult is willing to give his mom his spare kidney.  She definitely raised her kid right!

Do you think you could donate one of your kidneys or bone marrow to a loved one? I would do it in a heartbeat.  In fact, I’m registered with the National Marrow Donor Program and am willing to donate to a complete stranger if needed.

  1. I could and would, in a heartbeat. For either of my parents, my son, my brother, my nieces or my husband, although I know that would be a less likely match.

And I have been registered at the National Bone Marrow Program for over 10 years, but thank you for posting the link, because I don’t know if I ever updated my address the last time I moved.

  2. My son-in-law received a kidney from his brother…we are VERY organ transplant oriented around here! Good to hear there are more of you out there! It’s such a gift……..

  3. I would give my life for a loved one. Organ donation is a very noble cause indeed.

  4. Yes, I would, as long as I was healthy enough to be around for my children.

Happy Holidays, D, and best wishes for a spectacular 2009, with plenty of political fodder (the good kind) for your blog!

  5. Wow! Yes, I would – but I have a limited number of people to whom I’d donate a kidney.

  6. Indeed I would donate a kidney or bone marrow if needed. Thanks for being registered and reminding everyone about the Registry.
