That’s Just Plain Wrong

Okay, now I am not a Palin fan. I know, it’s a shocker isn’t it? I also have my issues with the evangelicals and their close-mindedness. However, when I read about the Wasilla Bible Church catching on fire, I thought it was fucked up. This is the church that has received a lot of attention due to Gov. Palin’s ties with the church. It also came under scrutiny with the church’s belief that homosexuals could overcome their gay desires and live heterosexual lives. Um… I’d like to call “bullshit” on that one… that’s another posting for another time.

The fire happened Friday night with a group of women inside the church. However, everyone made it out alive and there was about 1 million dollars worth of damage to the building itself.  Gov. Palin did apologize to the assistant pastor saying that she hoped that the fire was not in connection to her affiliation with the church during the election and the attention that came from it.

Again, I’m not a Palin fan. However, attacking her or her church by violent means is reprehensible.  I mean, what point does burning down Palin’s church make?  It’s fucked. It reminds me of the vandalism of a few mosques in the U.S. after 9/11 and the burning of black churches in the south.

There’s plenty that I disagree with. If you haven’t figured out, I have my opinions and I’m not afraid to write about them. Key phrase being that I write about them.  Just because someone pisses me off does not give me the entitlement to go blow their fucking house down or attack their place of worship.

I’m not sure how many of you are familiar with Fred Phelps. He’s the pastor of Westboro Baptist Church, in Topeka, KS, which was known in the late 80′s and 90′s for their protests at the funerals of gay men.  He also said that the terrorist attacks were God’s way of punishing society for tolerating gays.  In more recent years, his church has gone around to protest the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq. Although the military is “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”, according to the church, the soldiers died fighting for a country that tolerates gays.  Seriously fucked up.

Okay, so about two and a half years ago, my sister and I were out in Kansas City, visiting my dad for his birthday. (He had hit the big 6-0.) While we were there, we visited the Brown vs. Board of Education National Historic Site, which is located in Topeka. On our way out of town, we passed right by the Westboro Baptist Church, which was located in a storefront in the downtown area. Seeing that storefront was the first time that I had ever had the urge to throw a brick at a building. However, I was in a moving vehicle at the time. Well, that and I knew that violence never really solved much of anything.

It doesn’t take that many brain cells to throw fists or objects (lit up or not). However, it does take a bit of brain power to make one’s feelings known in a more peaceful manner.  I decided to take the smart approach, and have in many different scenarios.

So, to the dumbass who started the fire at Wasilla Bible Church (allegedly), you could have just written some lovely hate mail instead of lighting the place up during craft time.  Rubbing two sticks together doesn’t really get out much of a message other than you must really be trying to secure your spot somewhere very warm in the afterlife. (Providing there is such a place.)

  1. I agree with you D, the pen is mightier than the sword. If you ever have a free moment, you should listen to the Shirley Phelps interview on the podcast Feast of Fools. That’s a whole different kind of crazy.

  2. Yep, she’s out to lunch.

  3. Isn’t it so sad to think that people think destruction is going to ever change anything? It just leads to more destruction.

I so enjoy your comments on M & H and am now just starting to scratch the surface of your great blog.

    I’ll be back for more!
    Cheers!

  4. Skyewriter-
It is sad that some people haven’t figured out that yet.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  5. Great post and so well put. Hatred is one thing… but violence is another. The pen is so much more mightier than the sword. That is why we are all here putting these thoughts down into words.
