Odor From Animal Poop Is Now Exempt

The Lame Duck is really making an impact in his last days, isn’t he? A couple lines from this article that had me rolling with laughter, which I feel the need to share:

The Bush administration issued a regulation Friday exempting farms from reporting releases of hazardous air pollution from animal waste to federal, state and local authorities. The rule applies specifically to the gases from manure that are often responsible for odor problems.

You know, I’ve sat here many of hours contemplating the impact that reports about the odors from animal poop have made in regard to keeping the responders away from focusing on natural disasters and factory spills. Haven’t you?

Okay, take a moment to picture this:  A herd of cows standing around, chewing the cud and pooping. Right by the herd of cows is a huge nuclear reactor that has just gone haywire.  Authorities are called by two different sources: One being inside the nuclear facility that there has just been a major leak.  The other call, from a farm  reporting hazardous air pollution from their cow poop.   You still with me?  Okay. Now, lets just say you happen to be a member of the response team who has to deal with these calls. Which would you select first:  Nuclear reactor gone haywire or cow poop?

That’s what I figured.

I look at that being a poor reason for weakening the regulation on farms.  This gives places like factory farms the ability to continue with their horrible practices. Not to mention, the environment is impacted by hazardous waste in a negative way. Some poop is good. After all, I use fertilizer every year to help grow vegetables in my garden.  However, a little bit of poop goes a long way.  Much like my posting about Bush lowering the requirements that protect endangered species, I’m left sitting here thinking that this lame-duck is really, really, trying to ensure his place in the history books.

I’m glad to see that he doesn’t give a rat’s ass about what we’re leaving behind for future generations of not only humans, but of wildlife as well. I mean, come on, why should we care what we leave behind? (If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.) So to read about modifying the regulation on farm waste does not surprise me. Hell, he’s full of it himself.

President-Elect Obama definitely has his work cut out for him. Poor guy. I wonder if he regrets running for office, with all of the shit he has to clean up.

  1. I am so pissed. We are struggling, and he is about to move into a mcmansion and ruining the planet. I can’t dwell on this, I have to just continue the countdown to change…

  2. He has 37 days left to fuck with regulations. Granted, President Elect can, and will, overturn some of these regulations that are being modified. However, I suppose the lame duck feels that perhaps some of these will squeak by.

  3. I wonder if he cares that he’ll go down as the worst president in U.S. history? I still can’t believe such an idiot became president in the first place.

I have been writing holiday cards today and have signed many of them, “Happy 2009 – the end of the evil empire!”

  4. Riot Kitty- I couldn’t believe there were enough idiot voters who selected him… twice.

  5. I am so ready for him to be GONE! He seems to be doing his best to continue to tell the entire country to Eff Off. He’s gotten away with so much, stealing, murder, etc, what’s a little more?

  6. That is terrible. I have read quite a bit aobut CAFOs and what they do to the environment…it’s not pretty. I’ve also driven past the Harris Ranch (huge cattle ranch in CA-you can smell it for over 20 miles in either direction) it’s terrible.

Rolling Stone did a great article on the hog CAFOs. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/12840743/porks_dirty_secret_the_nations_top_hog_producer_is_also_one_of_americas_worst_polluters

  7. I dated a guy (about a decade ago) who worked for IDEM (Indiana Department of Environmental Management).

Confined feeding operators must pay special fees for waste management/ removal and boy, oh boy, do they cry foul about it. There is part of the I-65 corridor between Indianapolis and Chicago that has at least a dozen of these facilities (chickens and hogs).

The methane from the waste can lead to explosions if not properly handled. Run-off into streams can also lead to fish kills. Not to mention what it does to the water table.

I feel sorriest for the animals, tho’. They live and die in their own waste.

  8. skyewriter- It’s sickening, the factory farming. Purdue (chicken) is one of the worst contributors in the mid-atlantic region. I was aware of it before I read Animal Liberation. However, it wasn’t until after that I started buying organic/free-range meat.
